The History

The Usui System of Natural Healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho) or Reiki is a healing art that anyone can learn. It is a hands-on healing discipline that simply but powerfully balances body, mind, heart and spirit through gentle touch by using life's natural healing energy. It is not a religion, but honors and coexists peacefully with all religions and belief systems. Reiki's tradition is oral and is passed from teacher to student based on their personal relationship as Reiki student and teacher. The following is a thumbnail sketch of Reiki's history.

In the late 1800's, Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator undertook an extensive study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders.  Through study, research, and meditation, he evolved a system of healing based on ancient Buddhist and Hindu teachings. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching this method of natural healing which involves the laying on of hands.  Dr. Usui authored the principles of Reiki. One of Dr. Usui's students, Chujiro Hayashi continued his work after his death opening a clinic and school in Tokyo.  One of Dr. Hayashi's students, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who was born in Hawaii of Japanese descent, brought Reiki to the mainland of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Mrs. Takata's granddaughter Phyllis Lei Furumoto, the present grandmaster of the Usui System of Natural Healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho) has taught and encouraged the teaching of Reiki worldwide. Contact us to schedule a Reiki treatment or to learn more!
