Guided Visualization We begin with an information gathering session. It's important to determine what the procedure or situation is, what the client knows about it, what concerns or questions the client has and whether there is a desire to explore and gain insight about any underlying source of the disease/illness or situation. Additionally, the client's preferences for different types of music and composers is explored. An audio tape is created for the client with one side containing a guided visualization "voiced" over a musical selection. The second side contains music only. The music is selected based on its native ability to evoke emotional responses that are compatible and synergistic with the process. During the guided visualization session, I take the client on a positive and affirming "dress rehearsal". We journey from the point of their first decision to have the procedure, through each step of the procedure, and on to recovery. The client's participation is the natural evoking of the mind-body connection, for example, assisting the surgeon by controlling their bleeding and maintaining a clear surgical field. If desired by the client, we will embark on a second segment of the guided journey to address the underlying source of the disease/illness or situation, again using positive and affirming imagery. I create each guided visualization for the client's specific situation. The client receives the tape in ample time to listen to before, during and after their procedure. Suggestions are given on how to approach the Conventional Care Provider about use of such a tape, including during the procedure. This modality has been found to be of great
benefit by clients and most often has been used in preparation for
surgery, cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Bone Marrow
Transplant), other medical procedures and dental procedures. |
